Forensic science is often shortened to just forensics. But there are several kinds of forensics as it pertains to criminal investigations. The most popular kind is physical forensics which is the application of a many different sciences to answer questions of interest to the legal system. This may be in relation to a criminal or civil investigation. At its core, forensics is about an accepted scholarly or scientific methodology to finding, collecting, storing and presenting facts about an event, an artifact, or some other physical presence such as a corpse.

There are many core differences between computer forensics and physical forensics. At the highest level, physical forensic sciences focus on identification and individualization. Both of these processes are used to compare an item from a crime scene with other substances to determine the substance of the item. For instance, is the red stuff blood or juice; human blood or animal blood. Computer forensics on the other hand focuses on finding the digital evidence and analyzing it.

While the reality of a career in criminal psychology might not quite be what it is on “Criminal Minds,” the television show, the real-life potential can be just as exciting. Careers in criminal psychology are never boring, and if you have an education in that field, it’s great training for a huge range of jobs. You can do something different every day. You could work in counseling people who have committed crimes and need psychological assessment. Many psychologists are exploring computer-related fields, like studying Internet predators or helping investigate online fraud.

The potential for criminal psychology is evolving. With the rapid growth of Internet-related criminal activity, the need for tech savvy, educated law enforcement workers will continue to expand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities in all realms of law enforcement will steadily grow anywhere between nine and 14 percent through 2014.

But even as cutting-edge technology forces career psychologists to redefine their roles in law enforcement, there are also plenty of traditional aspects of the career that will remain unchanged, like the research component to psychology careers not necessarily depicted on the show.

Much of a psychologist’s time is spent in front of a computer screen, reading books or articles, and interviewing suspects and convicted offenders. In addition, a criminal psychology background may also often be used to educate and inform other people involved in solving crimes. Psychologists also write books, publish papers, lecture, and train law enforcement agents interested in using psychological elements in their investigations.

The idea behind digital investigation is based on the fact that digital data is be stored, so you need to have the specialized training to recognize how data can be accidentally changed while investigating, and how to avoid changing it. A computer or a camera can be much like a dead body at a crime scene – you need to collect evidence from it in a very specific way.

There are many reasons to use computer forensics such as:

In legal cases, computer forensic techniques are used to analyze computer systems belonging to defendants (in criminal cases) or litigants (in civil cases).
To recover data when there is a hardware or software failure.
To analyze the data on a computer system after a break-in
To collect evidence against an employee that an organization wishes to terminate.
To collect information about how computer systems work for the purpose of performance optimization, debugging, or reverse-engineering.

Special measures need to be taken when conducting forensic investigations if it is desired for the results to be used in a court of law. One of the most important procedures is to make sure that the evidence has been accurately collected and that there is a clear chain of custody from the scene of the crime to the investigator—and into the courtroom.
